Half of the color charts
Color Charts
I am re-doing my color charts as part of the Color Study in Chelsea Lang’s Allaprima Bootcamp. I previously made a set in Feb 2019, after reading Allá Prima II by Richard Schmid.
I am using different pigments now, different brands, a more specific method, and more care. (On my easel I’m just finishing #7).
I am paying more attention to pre-mixing on my glass palette (underlaid with a grey palette paper), to make even value jumps before I paint them on the chart.
I mix the basic mix using the pre-dominant color (the darkest value), then the lightest value (Titanium white plus just a speck of the basic mix). Then I attempt to mix the mid-value, using a red acetate filter to check it when I think I’ve arrived. I’m finding that what looks like a mid-value on my gray palette actually looks too dark on my white board, so I’m adjusting it now to appear lighter on my palette.
My palette knife technique is improving!
I love to see the colors it’s possible to make, and these are only a small set of what’s possible! What if I mixed each duo of colors in varying proportions and varying values? What if I added a third color? I feel I’m improving at knowing what two colors to mix to achieve a color I have in mind, or can see, which increases my confidence. A great exercise!
